FILM PRODUCTION WORK

This page provides an overview of all the main film and multimedia projects that Chris Owen and Colourframe Productions have been involved in. It contains clips of finished and work-in-progress pieces.

ELEMENTS

'Elements' is a ten-minute, multimedia, abstract film, featuring an extended sequence of fluid images of coloured light sources, distorted by a combination of inclement weather and camera techniques. These are allied by an ambient music score, designed to alter the viewer's perception and understanding of the lights. A development of the award-winning 'Seconds Of Arc' (scroll down page), the visuals are by Chris Owen, and the score was composed by Ian Paul www.ianpaul.co.uk

Below are some still images from 'Elements' to illustrate its visual style.

A REASON FOR FALLING

'A Reason For Falling' began life as my university graduation film.  The completed film will be about 70 minutes long, and is inspired by Tarkovsky's 'Stalker'. It involves a journey taken by two characters, at odds as they strive to complete works of fiction as they travel across a derelict landscape. Each character is actually a train of thought inside the mind of a writer, while the landscape is representative of his state of mind as he struggles to finish a novel. This struggle is played out on screen by the two characters.

We hope to complete filming by the middle of Autumn, with the editing completed towards the end of the year. I plan to enter the film into various festivals and competitions in 2010.

A Reason For Falling' features local theatre actors Richard Jones and Colin Tavener in the two leads, is written and directed by Chris Owen, and has a score composed by Ian Paul. Below are two complete scenes from the film.

DREAMSCAPE

Written and directed by Daniel J. Fox, Dreamscape is a fast-paced science fiction noir thriller that is fast nearing completion. Visually striking with its sharply lit black and white pallette, Dreamscape shares elements of The Manchurian Candidate, the Bourne films, even Total Recall, with its twisting, layered plot of experimental mind technology, corporate corruption, and confusion over identity and reality. Allied to a highly creative and dedicated production team, these influences have provided an inspiration towards creating an exciting, original and imaginative work that truly belies its modest budget. The film's original trailer can be seen below.

'Dreamscape' was originally completed as a 64 minute film, but over the last 12 months has been extended to 90 minutes due to interest from American distributors. This has resulted in a truly expanded 'Dreamscape', with a more intricate story, greater character depth, richer sub-plots and more opportunities to showcase the film's innovative production design. The extra material hasn't merely been inserted between existing scenes; the entire film has been re-edited to maintain a continuity in pacing, story arcs and character development. Below is the teaser trailer to illustrate the extended version.

I've been involved on 'Dreamscape' as cameraman, occasional assistant director, and even turning my hand to acting in the role of The Lookout. Visit 'Dreamscape's website for news, trailers, production diaries, and details of the film already winning a pair of awards, including a prestigious composer's award. www.dreamscapethemovie.com

IN VISIBILITY

'In Visibility's unique feature lies in the fact that its story can only be told in reverse. The tale of a man who falsely poses as a courier in the underground black market of illegal human organs, 'In Visibility' is a film about moving through time, and how every person has an infinite number of future paths ahead of them, but is destined to take only one. The film traces the outcome of one possible path backwards through time, back to the point where the man's many future paths present themselves in a single moment. It's trailer can be seen below.

'In Visibililty' was nominated for Best Film at the 2006 Ffresh Festival, the student film and animation festival of Wales.

A DVD was produced, featuring the full 32 minute version, a shorter 30 minute festival version, design work, out-takes, unused footage, a trailer, alternate title sequence, production photos and the complete screenplay.

'In Visibilty' stars John Durham as the man posing as the courier, with support from Daniel J. Fox, Ian Paul, Mark Ellingham, Clare Davies and Gareth Owen. It was written, directed, filmed and edited by Chris Owen, and Ian Paul also created the film's score.

SECONDS OF ARC

'Seconds Of Arc' is an award-winning, six minute, abstract film based on colour and fluidity. The original images were all created in-camera, and are similar to those developed for the later 'Elements' (see above): coloured lights distorted by water, distance, wind and camera techniques. The score is intended to make the viewer question the origin of the lights.

'Seconds Of Arc' won the award for Best Music Media at the 2006 Ffresh Festival, the student film and animation festival of Wales. Below are some stills to illustrate its visual style.

A filmed interview I did for Radio Wales immediately after winning the award can be viewed on youtube here - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fW3bjKLEEgg

INDISCRIMINATE

Black comedy documentary, 'Indiscriminate', was largely inspired by films like 'Man Bites Dog', and was written, acted and shot in a very similar style. Shot in black and white, running at 43 minutes, it follows a pretentious and easily-distracted French hitman, theorising on the rules of his work, which he routinely breaks without apprearing to realise. 'Indiscriminate' was written and directed by Chris Owen, and features theatre actor Julian Pemberton in the lead. The film's trailer can be seen below.

A DVD of 'Indiscriminate' was produced, featuring the full length movie, a commentary track by writer/director Chris Owen and actor Ian Paul, out-takes, unused footage, a before-and-after footage comparison and the film's trailer. Below are a couple of still images from the film.
